Periodicals Assistant | Periodicals Bindery Assistant | Cataloging Assistant | Gift and Exchange Assistant

Periodicals Assistant

The duties of this position include:
  • Providing assistance to patrons at the Periodicals Help Desk
  • Shelving periodicals
  • Shelf reading
  • Maintaining user statistics
  • Servicing copy machines
  • Other projects as needed

Hours are available days, evenings, and weekends, Sunday through Saturday.

Periodicals Bindery Assistant

The duties of this position include:
  • Pre-bindery work in preparation for commercial binding of books and periodicals
  • Routine bindery work, operating machines that bind periodicals
  • Post-bindery work after materials return from commercial bindery
  • Other projects as needed

Hours are available from 7:45am until 5pm, Monday through Friday.

Cataloging Assistant

The duties of this position include:
  • Producing labels through OCLC for monographs, AV, software, and sound recordings
  • Attaching labels and doing final processing of materials according to written procedures
  • Relabeling as needed
  • Other projects as needed

The skills needed for this position are:

  • A high degree of accuracy
  • Attention to detail
  • An understanding of cataloging procedures
  • Computer and typing skills
  • Knowledge of format of Library of Congress call numbers is helpful

Hours are available 8am until 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Gift and Exchange Assistant

The duties of this position include:
  • Checking gifts against library holdings for duplicates
  • Checking duplicate exchange lists for wanted items
  • Providing assistance patrons at Periodicals Help Desk
  • Maintain user statistics
  • Other projects as needed

Good typing skills are essential.

Government Documents

The duties of this position include:

  • Processing incoming shipments of federal and state government documents
  • Typing and filing shelf-list cards
  • Straightening and shelving documents
  • Shelf reading
  • Checking the online catalog for records
  • Typing cataloging records for new items
  • Other projects as needed

Attention to detail, legible handwriting, and good typing skills are essential.

Hours are available 7:45am until 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Reference/Archives

The duties of this position include:
  • Shelving and filing materials from Reference, Special Collection, and the Area Research Center Collection
  • Shredding confidential documents
  • Data entry
  • Assisting the Archivist in the maintenance of University Archives
  • Assisting the Reference Librarians on projects as needed
  • Research using resources on microfilm, microfiche, and paper
  • Other projects as needed

The skills needed for this position are:

  • Attention to detail
  • Good keyboarding skills
  • Ability to lift at least 30 pounds
  • Ability to work alone
  • Basic knowledge of American history is helpful

Hours are available 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday.
