Borrowing & Returning Library Materials

All patrons must present a valid ID or borrowing card in order to borrow material from the University Library. Patrons may check out items once without their ID by presenting a valid driver's license (or other state ID). The following ID cards may be used in addition to UW-Whitewater HawkCards , Community Borrowers , Friends of the Library , Other UW Schools.

UW-Whitewater students, staff & Faculty

Material may be checked out from the University Library Circulation Desk with a valid UW-Whitewater ID card (HawkCard). The UW-Whitewater HawkCard Office in the University Center (office 245) issues valid ID cards to UW-Whitewater students, faculty, staff, and emeriti. Replacement ID cards can be obtained at the HawkCard Office. A $10.00 fee is charged for a replacement card

Community Borrower Card

Community Borrower Cards are available for purchase from the University Library Circulation Desk. Wisconsin Residents 18 years or older with a valid Wisconsin driver's license or Wisconsin picture ID (and are not in high school) may purchase a Community Borrower Card for a fee of $2.00 per card. Patrons in elementary, middle, and high school may use their school's Interlibrary Library Loan department to obtain resources from the University Library. Community Borrower Cards are not available to UW-whitewater students, faculty, and staff. A Community Borrower Card is valid for one year from the date of purchase and may be renewed thereafter with no additional charge. A $3.00 fee is charged for a replacement card.

Friends of the Library Card

When a patron becomes a member of the "Friends of the Library", he/she may check out library materials. The current "Friends of the Library" minimum single membership is $25.00 per year. "Friends of the Library" have the same borrowing privileges as "Community Borrowers".

Other UW Schools

Visiting patrons from other University of Wisconsin schools may use their current "home" ID to check out materials. Materials checked out from the University Library may be returned to any other UW Library. Likewise materials from any other UW Library may be returned to the UW- Whitewater University Library.

Loan periods and the number of renewals vary depending both the material type and the patron's status.

All overdue materials are subject to fines of 25 cents per day (for books, government documents, and audio materials) and $1.00 per day for video items. Any materials more than 28 days overdue will be considered lost and the patron will be charged a $15.00 non-refundable processing, plus the cost of replacing the item and the maximium overdue fines of $65.00. Renewals

Items may be renewed online by accessing your personal records.
  1. Go to the library Home Page (http://library.uww.edu)
  2. Then select UW-W Catalog
  3. Click on "Personal Record"
  4. Enter your ID number (middle 7 digits), Last Name, and click "Login"


A listing of items checked out to you and their due dates will be displayed. To renew your materials, check the "Renew?" box next to each item and click the "Renew Items" button at the bottom of the page. You may renew your items once provided another patron has not requested the material.

Please note that online renewal must be done before the specified due date.

Recalled Materials

The library reserves the right to recall any materials requested for Course Reserves. Patrons will be notified of recalled material and will be given not less than 7 days to return the recalled item. Overdue fines for recalled materials are $1.00 per day.

Returning Materials

Library materials may be returned when the library is closed by putting them in one of two book returns.

One return is located directly outside the library in the lobby of the Andersen Library Building and the other is on the outside of the exterior doors at the southern end of the Andersen Library Building.
