Library Services for Off-Campus Users

Table of Contents:

Connecting to Library Restricted Resources

Off campus user access to licensed databases is restricted to UW-Whitewater registered students, faculty and staff only. Not all licensed databases provide off campus access.

From the library's homepage, click on the Find Articles, Statistics... link and select from the alphabetical, subject, or system list. Once a database has been chosen you will be asked for your Net-ID and Password. If you are unsure of your Net-ID or you would like to change your password you can go to Net-ID Password Change Self Service or contact the iCIT HelpDesk. Once you have connected to one database you will be able to access others without needing to log in again as long as you are in the same session. If you experience any technical issues, check out the troubleshooting page to look for solutions to your problem.

Finding Books:

UW-Whitewater Library Catalog
Use the catalog to find books, videos, titles of journals or magazines and other material in the University Library. Do not use the catalog to find articles in journals or magazines.
Universal Borrowing
Universal Borrowing allows UWW faculty, staff or students to check out material from any of the participating UW System libraries and have that material delivered to the campus most convenient to the user. Delivery is within a day or two on weekdays.   A Universal Borrowing Tutorial is available which explains the process more completely.
Other Library Catalogs
Use this link to explore other libraries in the UW System, public libraries in Wisconsin (with direct links to Madison, Milwaukee and Whitewater) and libraries around the world.

Circulation
InterLibrary Loan (ILLiad)
InterLibrary Loan is used to get items that are not available through Universal Borrowing and for periodical articles not available in print or online from UW-Whitewater. A $1 charge per item will be billed to your student account.  At this time, ILLiad does not work with Netscape so it is strongly recommended that you use Internet Explorer as your web browser.
Reference (chat or email help in doing research)
Reference librarians also answer questions by phone. They can be reached at 262-472-1032.
Electronic Reserves
This page contains information to assist when you are having technical difficulties in reaching electronic reserves or in reading and/or printing an article. It is also the gateway that you should use access electronic reserves from off campus, do not go directly from the library catalog link on the library homepage.

Internet Sites by Subject

The Librarian Selected Internet Resources list sites on the World Wide Web which have been evaluated by reference librarians and chosen for their usefulness for research. These sources can help to navigate the vast amount of information available on the Web. The list also includes links to many U.S. and Wisconsin government resources. Law Resources provides links to case law, statutes and regulations at all levels of government; federal, state and local.

Distance Education

Students who are enrolled in UW-Whitewater courses and who don't come to campus for those courses are considered Distance Education (DE) students. Document Delivery service is available to DE students. Document Delivery means that when an item is found in the UWW catalog a DE student can request that the item be sent to the student's home location. The item will be mailed for no charge but the student is responsible for the return postage. The student is also responsible for getting the item back to the library within a specified amount of time. Articles in journals which are held in the UWW library will be scanned and emailed to your university email address for a $1.00 fee. The charge will be attached to your student bill. Use the ILLiad form to request document delivery and be sure to indicate that you are a Distance Education student.  If you don't use your UWW email account as your main email access it will be important for you to check your UWW email account regularly. Students who live within a 30 mile radius of the UWW campus are expected to come into the library for material. A University of Wisconsin-Whitewater ID card gives reciprocal borrowing privileges at other UW System campuses. Students are urged to use facilities closer to their homes, if available, to expedite the process.
