Seventh Annual Dinner & Program

Business Meeting and dinner: 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm (Fern Young Terrace)

Program: 7:15 pm Deborah Blum will present a talk based on her book Ghost Hunters:  William James and the Search for Scientific Proof of Life After Death.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, "spiritualism" became popular on both sides of the Atlantic, competing with the scientific and empirical findings of Darwin and others.  Deborah Blum, Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer, brings archival work, scientific insight, and compelling narrative skills to the story of William James and his project to scientifically prove the existence of ghosts, spirits, and psychic phenomena.  Clairvoyance and ghostly visitations had become cultural obsessions.    Her investigation probes the nexus of empiricism and revelation, competing methodologies through which we continue to "make sense" of experience.

Location: Fern Young Terrace.

“Blogs and RSS feeds”

by Martha Stephenson, UW-Whitewater Library Bibliographic Instruction Coordinator

A blog is a website that is easily created and updated, somewhat like an online diary. It can include text, images, videos, and more. There are blogs on just about every topic imaginable, including news, professional, entertainment and more. An RSS feed is a way to subscribe to one or more blogs and view entries from them without needing to visit each one individually. The content will come to you instead of you going to it. This workshop will introduce you to popular blog services and, using one, demonstrate creating a blog, adding an RSS feed, posting messages and leaving comments. Also covered will be using Bloglines, an aggregator service, to search for and subscribe to feeds.

There is no charge for this workshop.  RSVP is optional, but will guarantee your seat.  (262-472-1032 or refdesk@uww.edu)

Location: Library BI Lab (University Library L2211)
